New York Turns Out For Abortion Rights

Last Wednesday there were spontaneous rallies for abortion rights across the country to protest the leaked Supreme Court majority opinion draft overturning Roe v. Wade, which would effectively make abortion illegal in many states across the country. New Yorkers gathered in Foley Square, and Cell Vision contributing photographer Kenny Rodriguez was there to capture it.

Last Wednesday abortion rights advocates quickly assembled in New York City’s Foley Square to voice their anger in the wake of the leaked Supreme Court majority opinion draft foreshadowing the reversal of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court opinion that legalized abortion for women across the United States. Once made official, this opinion would remove the federal protections that have guaranteed women access to safe and legal abortion nationwide, opening the door for individual states to ban and criminalize the procedure for doctors and women alike.

Choppers circled the skies as attendees in green descended on Foley Square from sidewalks and subways, carrying signs and expressing rage at the shocking news. The crowd demanded body autonomy in English, Spanish, and Mandarin, as chants of "hey hey! ho ho! Sam Alito's got to go!" echoed off the buildings. It was a chilling sight, not for the people's show of resolve, but for the looming decision threatening Americans in 2022, and the danger to more human rights after. Cell Vision contributing photographer Kenny Rodriguez was there to capture it all, in this stunning set of photos.
